This little moist environment is perfect for encouraging the growth of mould and lichens.  These unwanted ‘organisms’ will actually attack the surface of your deck and cause permanent damage. Get out the leaf blower or broom and clean away the leaves. A regular hose down to wash away mud is also a must-do. Scrub if required. If you have left this maintenance off the To Do List for too long, there are restoration methods which can be really effective.

Finally, never sit your pot plants directly on the deck. The deck timbers underneath will never be able to dry out. They will rot. Always sit the pot on terracotta feet, or similar. These are available from most hardware stores.
